Who is PRUMA? Puerto Rican Union of Mutual Aid, Inc. was organized in May 1937 and incorporated July 7, 1937. Our motto is to "Advance with Progress". The Association was founded by a group of Puerto Ricans who came from Hawaii to the East Bay and wanted to create a benevolent organization to further their people. The purpose for the Association is to help other Puerto Ricans in the San Francisco Bay Area. We bring the Puerto Rican community together keeping the culture alive through our Jíbaro music and Puerto Rican food. We hold regular dances and raise funds for educational scholarships and other community benefits. We are proud to have Mr. Tony Pagan as our current President. Contact: Tony Pagan at

Mission Statement
Puerto Rican Union of Mutual Aid, Inc.

Our mission as an association is to unite the Puerto Rican people of the greater Bay Area by providing a warm, clean, friendly environment that develops our rich cultural heritage through our food, dance and customs. Putting an emphasis on education for our youth through scholarships and growing our ability to become a greater facilitator to our people by providing mutual aid and benefits to those in need growing the association by outreach and focusing on young Puerto Rican families. Encouraging each other by exemplifying honor, dignity and true Puerto Rican pride.

If you haven’t had a chance I would suggest to you to take a trip to our nation’s capitol. My family and I just returned from Washington DC and Quantico Virginia for our son’s Marine Corps Officer Commissioning. What an awesome experience walking the floors of the Capitol where Abraham Lincoln and so many of our presidents have walked. Standing in front of the Washington, Lincoln and Jefferson memorials as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, JFK and Robert Kennedy’s graves, Iwo Jima and the Korean War Memorial gave us chills.
I have made several trips to DC but my dream has always been to bring my family and I can now cross this off of my bucket list. Being part of a great country that is relatively young compared to the rest of the world there is something awe inspiring being in the center of our country’s government. Every time I visit DC I leave feeling extremely lucky and patriotic.
Attending my son’s commissioning was yet another emotional and prideful moment. This year history was made with the largest commissioning class in US history. With 7 platoons on deck compared to the usual 4, it was a sight to see. It was great to see our young men and women stepping up to the plate to serve and protect our country. It gives you hope for our future and a new outlook on this generation of unselfish young people.
We are a blessed people and I want to encourage you all to register and vote in the coming election. I especially want to encourage the women to vote! If more women would vote you collectively could change the direction of our country. For over 150 years women have fought for the right to be heard in our country and you should exercise your right to vote. Statistics show that Hispanic’s are least likely to vote. Let’s make a change and get out and vote!

A Fun Weekend Camping! By Cindy Caraballo

This year we had 14 campsites and on "PRUMA's BBQ Day" (Sat.) we had an additional 8 carloads of "for the day" visitors!
I do believe we had close to 90 people with only a handful that weren't members!
The oldest member in attendance was Mary Rodrigues and running a close second was Tillie Sayers. The youngest member was 3yr old Destiny Gramaldo.
Everyone who attended had lots of fun and enjoyed the water during the day & campfires at night. On Saturday we had hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks provided by PRUMA and potluck items included chili beans, spaghetti, potato, macaroni and green salads, fruit, chips and lots of pie and cookies. We also had water games for the kids and adults, we even had a little jam session with Pete Elisary, Jr. on the ukulele, Jeffrey Caraballo on percussion and Jesse Pagan helping with vocals.

The Modesto Reservoir camping trip was fun for all ages. This year we had a good turn out and a good time was had by all. Thank you to Cindy Caraballo, Myra Pagan and Lucille Elisary for coordinating the event!
